Recent Advances in Postharvest Physiology of Flowers
Halevy, Abraham H.
Abstract
In this presentation I will review some of our recent studies on subjects related to senescence and postharvest physiology of flowers. I chose to present three subjects that deal with important postharvest physiology problems and with flower handling, whose physiological background have not yet been sufficiently elucidated: (1) The importance of sensitivity to ethylene in pollination-induced petal senescence and the role of short chain saturated fatty acids in this process. (2) The regulation of gravitropic response of cut flowers and the role of cytosolic calcium in this process. (3) Senescence of flowers that does not involve ethylene production or sensitivity. The model system for these studies are iris flowers.
